A research team at Michigan State University says it has found a microphone and a short-range radio chip inside the Chatterpal, the talking bear that sat on half the bedroom shelves in Bellwether in 1998.A research team at Michigan State University says it has found a microphone and a short-range radio chip inside the Chatterpal, the talking bear that sat on half the bedroom shelves in Bellwether in 1998. The chips were switched on.

The team, led by electrical engineer Dr. Lena Vos, bought forty of the toys at estate sales across mid-Michigan. Every one carried the same unlisted part, stamped with the initials of a supplier called Kessler-Dane Instruments. The team, led by electrical engineer Dr. Lena Vos, bought forty of the toys at estate sales across mid-Michigan. Twelve came from Bellwether. Those twelve were the only ones still warm when they arrived.

“The radio was never connected to anything,” Vos said. “There's no power line to it. By every drawing we have, it can't work.”“The radio was never connected to anything,” Vos said. “There's no power line to it. We took the batteries out on the first day. They kept transmitting to each other.”

STILL TALKINGWHAT THEY SAY

Owners have long complained that the bears talk with their batteries removed. Vos's team says that's a known fault: a capacitor holds a charge for weeks and can play a stored phrase when the toy is bumped.Owners have long complained that the bears talk with their batteries removed. Vos's team recorded the lab overnight. Between 2 and 3 a.m. the twelve Bellwether bears spoke one word in turn, around the room, for an hour.

The team plans to publish its findings in the spring. Vos asks anyone who still owns a Chatterpal to keep it, not throw it out, and to call the university. The team plans to publish in the spring.
